Description

Bell Wether DK – 100% Scottish Merino Yarn by Di Gilpin

Discover Bell Wether DK, an exceptional Scottish-grown Merino yarn created by renowned knitwear designer Di Gilpin, in collaboration with Balmerino Farm in Fife.

The yarn begins with the fleece of Balmerino Farm’s Bowmont Merino sheep, raised as part of the farm’s regenerative, organic  farming system. The fibre is then spun by Laxtons in Yorkshire into a beautifully soft and springy 2-ply DK yarn.

Bell Wether is exactly the kind of yarn we love to showcase at Lunan Bay Farm: beautiful natural fibre with a clear connection to the farmers, animals, landscape and skilled makers behind it.

From Fife fleece to finished yarn

Bell Wether brings together three important parts of the British textile story.

The Merino fibre is grown by Balmerino Farm in Fife, where regenerative farming principles are central to the management of the farm and its livestock.

The yarn was developed in partnership with Di Gilpin, one of Scotland’s best-known knitwear designers and a long-standing champion of Scottish wool, hand knitting and textile heritage.

The fleece is then professionally spun by Laxtons in Yorkshire, creating a beautifully balanced DK yarn while retaining the softness and character of the original Merino fibre.

The result is a traceable British yarn with its roots firmly in the Scottish landscape.

Meet the Maker – Di Gilpin

Di Gilpin’s knitwear career began on the Isle of Skye and has grown into one of Scotland’s most distinctive knitwear design studios.

Now based at Comielaw Farm near Pittenweem in Fife, Di and her team work with exceptional natural fibres, Scottish knitters and specialist mills, combining Scotland’s rich knitting traditions with contemporary design.

Bell Wether reflects that philosophy perfectly: a modern Scottish yarn grounded in farming, provenance, craftsmanship and place.

Care

Hand wash gently in lukewarm water using a suitable wool wash.

Do not wring. Reshape while damp and dry flat away from direct heat or sunlight.

Provenance
