At Lunan Bay Farm, we rear Scottish Cashmere Goats for fibre production. Cashmere is the superfine undercoat that the goat grows over Winter and moults naturally in Spring. The quality of the cashmere fleece is determined by three factors: its length, its diameter, and the degree of crimping. Our Cashmere goats are bred from their fibre characteristics and have an average micro size of 15uM and staple length of 36mm, which is indicative of commercial grade Cashmere.
We, farmers Neil and Jillian McEwan run Lunan Bay Farm, a regenerative Goat Farm in Angus in the North East of Scotland. We are pioneering producers of homegrown Scottish Regenerative Cashmere, a first in Scotland for 30 years. Our aim is to produce quality Cashmere fibre which works in harmony with our environment and nature.
Our Cashmere goats are also utilised for their unique browsing capabilities. They selectively browse for docks, gorse and other invasive weeds, leaving clover and grasses to flourish. Our high welfare goats are reared on acres of undulated, coastal paddocks at Lunan Bay. Goats have a low carbon footprint, increase biodiversity, and when well managed can improve soil health.
Welfare is paramount on our farm. We rear our herds of pasture-fed goats extensively, allowing them to thrive in their preferred free range, varied environment. We look after our goats with the highest welfare standards and our closed herd has a High Health Status accreditation by our livestock governing body, SRUC. As part of our routine animal husbandry practices, we incorporate in house parasite monitoring, rotational grazing, and hoof trimming, in addition running breeding programs onsite.
Our purpose is to ethically produce Cashmere that works in harmony with our environment hence why we introduced goats to our farm. Goats are masters of regenerative agriculture as they improve pasture quality, leave the ground in a better condition that they found it and increase biodiversity. They have a lower carbon footprint than many other livestock, their meat has a higher nutritional value, they eliminate invasive, non-native weeds and they help recycle trace minerals back to the surface soil by selecting deep rooted plants.
